This issue includes artists' projects by Oliver Herring, Peter
Krashes, Jeff Gibson and Mickey Smith, plus a portfolio of
previously unseen work by Alex Masket. Other contents include
excerpts from a memoir by poet Jennifer Moxley, new fiction from
Kelly Sandoval and artifacts from the collection of the late,
esteemed rare books librarian Marjorie G. Wynne. Also featured are
new installments of two regular "Esopus" series, "Modern
Artifacts," which reproduces in facsimile documents related to the
museum's first Matisse exhibition, and "Guarded Opinions,"
featuring museum guards' impressions of the art they oversee.
French historian Stephane Gerson closes the issue with a
fascinating analysis of visual representations of Nostradamus over
the past 500 years. For the issue's CD, 11 musicians (including
Frightened Rabbit, Laura Gibson, Phil Kline and Natureboy) were
asked to create a new song inspired by one of Nostradamus'
quatrains.
Following the success of Projections 10, in which Mike Figgis interviewed a host of Hollywood filmmakers about the current state of the business, Projections 11 sets out to talk to those who have decided to live and work in the place many consider to be Hollywood's antithesis—New York City. In an attempt to map out the distinct draw and effect Gotham has on its film artists, writer/filmmaker Tod Lippy has interviewed some of the city's acclaimed indepent filmmakers, as well as established directors, producers, writers, actors, and agents who have made the city their home, and in many cases, their inspiration. What emerges from these interviews with Spike Lee, Tim Robbins, Jim Jarmusch, Frances McDormand, and Nora Ephron, among others, is a chorus of praise for the diversity, energy, and artistic integrity many feel can only be found in New York.
"Esopus "is a twice-yearly arts magazine featuring fresh,
unmediated perspectives on contemporary culture from a wide range
of creative professionals. It includes artists' projects, critical
writing, fiction, poetry, visual essays, interviews, and, in each
issue, an audio CD. Previous projects have taken the form of
removable posters, booklets, foldouts and hand-assembled
sculptures, and have often utilized complex printing processes,
unique paper stocks, and specially formulated inks. Issues also
typically include personal reflections on various creative
disciplines by practitioners. So far, these have included film
composer Carter Burwell, choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and
lighting designer Jennifer Tipton among many others. Also featured
in nearly every issue is a portfolio of work by an undiscovered
artist. Published by the non-profit Esopus Foundation Ltd., the
magazine has a simple mission: to provide an unfiltered,
non-commercial space in which creative people and the public can
connect in meaningful, productive ways.
